WW-01: Wastewater Operations Manager/Superintendent 

Position Summary:

Assists with the planning, organization and management of the daily operations, maintenance and testing of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Ensures compliance with established environmental, safety, operating, and emergency response procedures. Involved with public and employee interface to enhance relations. Interfaces with regulatory contacts from the Air Quality Management District, OSHA, County Hazardous Materials Management Oversight Agency and Regional Water Quality Control Board. 

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

Manage all day to day aspects of operation at a wastewater treatment facility with 5 or more direct reports. Interfaces with maintenance, laboratory and other work groups and staff as necessary. Works stand-by rotation and extended hours for emergency and wet weather events as necessary.


  • Degree in Business or Engineering or equivalent related experience.
  • Must have a valid California Grade V WWTP Certification.
  • Five to ten years progressive operations lead, supervisory and management experience within a medium to large (10-30 MGD) wastewater treatment facility with thorough knowledge of industry methods, techniques, principles, and practices.
  • Oversees and manages 24 hour emergency on-call for plant operational and odor response activities. Requires residing within 45 minute drive to site.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with an understanding of Human Resources / Relations principals.
  • Knowledge of Process / Operations Management, QA/QC procedures, Safety, Environmental and Facilities / Capital
  • Equipment Management.
  • Ingenuity and initiative are required to coordinate problem resolution, resolve conflicting priorities and to meet assignment deadlines within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose process problems and manage remedial action.
  • Exposure to budget preparation and cost control and demonstrates the ability to forecast budget, staffing and equipment needs.
  • Demonstrated effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills in order to interface with and motivate all levels of personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate, effective, complete and easily understood written communications and reports.
  • Strong PC skills with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database software and the ability to optimize the use of technology and systems to communicate, manage budget and to streamline processes and increase efficiency.
  • Familiarity with maintenance, operation, regulatory reporting and cost estimating software.
  • Proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).
  • Demonstrated commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Valid Driver’s license and safe driving record
